About the BMI Calculator

The BMI Calculator works out your Body Mass Index from your height and weight, in either metric (cm / kg) or imperial (inches / pounds) units, and tells you which weight category the result falls into. Body Mass Index is a quick, widely used screening number that estimates whether your weight is in a healthy range for your height. Everything is calculated in your browser, so your measurements are never uploaded or stored.

How to use it

  1. Choose metric or imperial units.
  2. Enter your height and your weight.
  3. Read your BMI and weight category, which update as you type.

Frequently asked questions

How is BMI calculated?

BMI is your weight in kilograms divided by the square of your height in metres (kg/m²). For imperial units it is 703 × pounds ÷ inches².

What is a healthy BMI?

A BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 is generally considered a healthy range. Below 18.5 is underweight, 25–29.9 is overweight and 30 or above is obese.

Is BMI accurate for everyone?

BMI is a useful general guide but does not distinguish muscle from fat, so it can be misleading for very muscular people, athletes, the elderly or children. Treat it as one indicator, not a diagnosis.
